Well Don had to have surgery last week to repair 2 hernias. Everything went well and he is back to work. He is a little bummed because he had just started running again and now he has to wait until he is released by the doctor.

I love summer…. relaxed schedules and longer daylight. May was a very busy month with all of the end of the school activities. Matt had and eighth grade dance that he went to which I chaperoned. It was kind of funny…. not many kids danced. The music was lame… it was this hip hop garbage. Well it is onto high school for Matt. He will attend Seminole High in Aug. He actually starts band activites this month. He plans on playing in the marching band. Aaron finished up 6th grade and Rachel 3rd. The kids had about a week to chill and then it was vacation……

We traveled to Washington DC with another family and had a great time. Saturday May 26th we left and drove to NC and then the next day to Virginia. Our home base was Massanutten VA, a ski resort area with swimming, go carts etc. Tuesday was our first DC day. That first day we went to the Archives building to see the Declaration of Independance, Bill of Rights, and Constitution. That actual building is beautiful and impressive. We then went to two of the Smithsonians, the Museum of Natural Science, and the Air and Space Museum. After dinner at Union Station we walked to the Washington Monument, the WWII Memorial, and the Lincoln Memorial. The Lincoln Memorial is huge!!! What a beautiful site to see all of that at night and to look back at the reflecting pool and see the Washington Monument and the Capitol in the background. Wednesday we relaxed at the resort because we knew Thurs. and Fri. would be very busy. Thursday we toured the Capitol and took pictures in Congressman Bill Young’s office. The three buildings of the Capitol are connected with underground tunnels. The Capitol is a beautiful and ornate with statues donated from all of the states and paintings everywhere. The very center of DC is in the middle of the capitol where George Washington was to be buried, but he wanted to be buried at his plantation, Mt. Vernon, and his wishes were carried out. After the Capitol it was on to the Library of Congress where we saw the Gutenberg bible on display.

Friday we toured the White House (at 7:30 AM) which meant we had to leave the resort at 3:30 in the morning to drive to the Metro station and take the 5:30AM train in to the city. We didn’t GW just lots of his secret service etc. and lots of pictures. The White House is smaller and not as ornate as many of the other buildings but still impressive. Friday we went to the rest of the memorials, the Korean and Vietnam. To me it was very overwhelming to think of all of the people who have sacrified for our freedoms in this country and we take it all so lightly. Next we visited the Ford theater, where Lincoln was shot and then took a train and bus out to Mt. Vernon. We could have spent an entire day at Mt. Vernon. It is a beautiful place right on the river.

Ok, I blogged a long, long time. It was a great trip. On the way home we stopped in Savannah and ate at the Pirate’s House.

The whole trip made me very happy and proud of our country.
